Three mechanical consequences, all following from the same multiplication:
- the total odds climb with every selection added;
- the implied probability of the ticket falls, since you are multiplying numbers below 1;
- a single losing selection wipes out the whole accumulator.
Adding a selection does not only raise the potential return. It adds one more necessary condition.
What is a single bet?
A single bet commits a stake to one selection: a winner, a number of goals, an exact score. The result of the bet depends on one event, and the potential payout comes from multiplying the stake by the displayed odds.
It is the most direct form: one condition, one ending. If the selection comes in, the ticket wins; if not, it loses. Nothing else enters the calculation.
What is an accumulator?
An accumulator — also called an acca or a parlay — brings several selections together on one ticket, with a single stake. Those selections can cover different matches, or several markets on the same match when the operator allows it.
The odds on the ticket are not the average of the individual odds: they are their product. And the winning condition is not "most of them come in", it is "all of them come in".

How the odds multiply
The total odds of an accumulator are the product of the odds of each selection. It is the only operation involved, and on its own it explains why accumulators display such high prices.
Three selections at 2.00, 1.50 and 1.80.
Total odds: 2.00 × 1.50 × 1.80 = 5.40.
With a €10.00 stake, the potential return goes from €20.00 (the first selection played on its own) to €54.00.
The climb is fast because it is multiplicative, not additive. Adding a fourth selection at 1.50 would take the odds to 8.10 — without any match having become easier to call.
What happens to the probabilities
Implied probabilities multiply exactly like the odds. Since they are numbers between 0 and 1, their product is always smaller than any of them.
Take the same three selections. Odds of 2.00 correspond to an implied probability of 50%, odds of 1.50 to around 67%, odds of 1.80 to around 56%.
The product: 0.50 × 0.67 × 0.56 ≈ 0.185, or about 18.5%. That is indeed 1 ÷ 5.40 — the total odds and the total implied probability describe the same thing.
Put another way: the ticket that pays most is the one the market judges least likely to land. The detail of moving from odds to percentage is covered on implied probability.
Higher total odds mean the market judges the whole set of conditions harder to bring together.
They do not mean the ticket is more attractive, nor that the market has got something wrong.
What happens when one selection fails
On a standard accumulator, a single losing selection wipes out the entire ticket. Nine correct selections out of ten produce no partial payout: the accumulator loses as though it had contained none at all.
That rule is what makes reading the result different from a single. On a single, the result tells you something about one specific selection. On an accumulator, it only tells you that at least one selection failed — and you have to reopen the ticket to find out which, which complicates tracking over time.

Why big odds are not automatically attractive

High odds correspond above all to a lower implied probability. They describe the estimated difficulty of the event, not the quality of the opportunity.
The reasoning that equates big odds with a bargain confuses two things: the size of a potential return and the frequency with which it happens. Odds of 5.40 promise a bigger return than odds of 2.00 precisely because the market judges the event roughly three times less likely.
Add to that something already present in every odd: the operator's margin. On an accumulator that margin is built into each of the selections, and since the odds multiply, those margins compound in the final price of the ticket. The mechanism is detailed on the bookmaker's margin.

Neither format is presented here as superior to the other, and this page does not recommend choosing one over the other. Single and accumulator follow two different mechanics: one isolates a condition, the other stacks several. The displayed price reflects that difference without judging it.
What can be said without ambiguity: the more conditions a ticket carries, the more scenarios there are in which it loses. That is an arithmetic property, not an opinion about the format.
